Dental Care Edgewater, FL

Dentistry

“Doggy Breath” is not normal! It is the sign of dental disease! Oral health is one of the biggest keys to overall health in our pets. Every cat or dog over the age of 1 year has some level of periodontal disease. However, many owners are unaware of the problems lurking in their pet’s mouths, and how detrimental they can be to their health and wellbeing.

Untreated dental disease can lead to pain, gum loss, tooth loss, bone infection, and seeding the body with bacteria which can lead to systemic infections, heart problems, kidney problems, and liver problems. Serious oral problems can stop a pet from eating. To prevent these unfortunate outcomes, we have a very strong focus on dental health at Indian River Animal Clinic. We evaluate, recommend and provide these services when needed for each pet:

  • Basic oral health exams
  • Preventive at-home pet dental care instruction
  • Full mouth dental x-ray to evaluate for trouble beneath the gum line
  • Professional cleaning
  • Extractions of damaged or unhealthy teeth

Surgery Edgewater, FL

Surgery

Indian River Animal Clinic is equipped to handle both routine and more complex surgical procedures. Every patient is thoroughly evaluated and their surgery protocol selected based on their individual needs. Exceptional skill, dedication, and solid pre- and post-operative protocols ensure the best possible outcome for our patients.

Pre-surgical evaluation — We thoroughly examine your pet and verify that he or she is healthy enough for surgery. We require all pets over 8 years of age to have blood work; and highly recommend it for all pets. Bloodwork can be run in our lab the morning before a procedure.

Careful selection of anesthetics and sedatives—Continuous monitoring and short acting, anxiety easing sedatives are utilized as a complement to our inhalant anesthetics. Our doctors tailor medication protocols to each patient.

Pain management—We provide pain relief before, during, and after surgery.

COMMONLY PERFORMED ANIMAL SURGERIES INCLUDE:

  • Spay and neuter procedures
  • Mass and tumor removal
  • Dental cleanings and procedures
  • Eye surgery
  • Wound and laceration care
  • Foreign body removal
  • Amputations
  • Emergency care (during office hours)

Surgical check-in is between 8 to 8:30 a.m. Pick-up is generally between 4 and 5 p.m. If your pet is showing clear signs of illness (runny nose, fever, etc.) or the blood work reveals problems, we will reschedule or re- evaluate your pet for surgery.

Advanced Digital X-rays Edgewater, FL

Digital Imaging & X-RAY

At Indian River Animal Clinic, we use a variety of diagnostic techniques and procedures to treat sick pets. In combination with our in-house veterinary laboratory and diagnostic skills, we employ digital x-ray and ultrasound to see the inside of your pets body. These diagnostics allow immediate diagnosis for rapid treatment.

Digital x-ray provides clearer images over film x-rays. The images produced can be enlarged, manipulated, and measured to provide detailed information. Our veterinary team can view the images in ways that are not possible with film x-ray. Greater information leads to faster diagnosis and more immediate treatment—speeding relief to your pet.

Digital x-ray is quicker, which means less time on the table and less stress for your pet. Our digital x-ray system exposes your pet to much less radiation than older units. An added benefit of digital x-ray is the ease of sharing them, they can be emailed and sent electronically, if second opinions or referrals are in order.

DIGITAL IMAGING IS IDEAL FOR DIAGNOSING A WIDE VARIETY OF CONDITIONS, INCLUDING:

  • Bone fractures
  • Tumors
  • Cancer
  • Orthopedic diseases
  • Gastrointestinal diseases
  • Heart and lung issues
  • Reproductive issues

Opthalmology

It’s been said that the eyes are windows to the soul, and they can tell us so much about your pet’s health. Our veterinarians utilize physical exam, evaluation of the inside of the eye using an ophthalmoscope, corneal stain testing, tear production testing, and Tonometry to measure the pressure within the eye to evaluate the health of your pet’s eyes. We also can conduct vision screening.

Our veterinarians can also perform many surgical procedures for the eyes, including eyelid growth removal, permanent removal of hairs growing the wrong way out of the eyelid, correction of eyelids that roll in or skin folds that scrape the eye, “Cherry Eye” surgeries, and some emergency corneal procedures for ulcers or lacerations. We can also help with referral to an ophthalmologist for cataract surgery.

Cardiology

Our pets really capture our hearts, but what about their hearts? Heart problems are best managed when diagnosed and treated early. Our veterinarians listen closely at every exam to screen for any murmurs, abnormal rhythms, or abnormal respiratory sounds.

If detected, further diagnostics such as bloodwork, blood pressure readings, ECG, chest x-rays, and/or heart ultrasound (Echocardiography) may be recommended to fully understand the nature of your pet’s heart problem and what needs to be done to give them the best heart function so they can live a happy full life. Using our ultrasound we can also perform some emergency procedures such as drawing fluid off the chest or from around the heart.
